Set up 4G Module Phone: from modem preparation to your first call

Check a first-generation DJI QDC507, prepare its companion service with the WorkBuddy Skill, and connect it by USB-C to an iPhone or iPad. Verify calls, SMS, and data separately.

Public release: 1.0.0, US$3.99 in the US and HK$32 in Hong Kong. Not currently available in mainland China. The 1.0.1 plug-and-play update is not yet public. Store prices and availability may change.

Start with your modem’s current state

Your modem is already prepared

Start at step 3: install the app, insert your SIM, and connect to your iPhone or iPad. Ask your provider which service version is installed and whether it supports the 1.0.1 automatic connection flow.

You have an unmodified modem

First inspect it on a computer and install the compatible companion service. Installing the app alone does not prepare the modem. The public Skill provides checks and instructions; obtain required service files from a trusted provider.

What you need

  • A first-generation DJI QDC507, the currently tested model. Other Cat4 modems, the second generation, and similar-looking devices are not automatically compatible.
  • A working SIM with the services you need: voice for calls, SMS for texting, and an active data plan plus the correct APN for internet access.
  • A USB-C iPhone or iPad, a reliable data connection, and an App Store account that can download the app. Check the store listing for current OS requirements.
  • A computer for initial modem preparation. The existing deployment procedure was mainly verified on Mac. Once prepared, everyday direct USB use does not need a running computer.

1. Have WorkBuddy inspect the device first

Download the ZIP and import it through your WorkBuddy client’s supported Skill import method. Give it this task and have it read SKILL.md before making changes.

Use the module-phone-install Skill to prepare a USB modem for 4G Module Phone. Read SKILL.md and identify the model, installed service, and computer environment first. Do not touch other devices or upload SIM information or keys. Prefer inspection and updates on prepared devices, preserving existing data. Verify connection, calls, SMS, and data separately.

2. Prepare the modem’s companion service

Follow the Skill to identify the specific modem, back up its configuration, and verify the compatible service files with SHA-256. Explain the effects and get the owner’s authorization before enabling debugging, installing boot entries, or changing modem settings. Keep power connected.

The public download contains no private pairing keys, SIM/eSIM profiles, customer messages, Apple signing files, or generic firmware image. If service files are missing, stop after preflight and obtain compatible files from your provider.

3. Install the app and connect your iPhone or iPad

  1. Check the currently available version and region in the App Store and install the app. The website ZIP is not an iOS installer; no unsigned, directly installable IPA is provided here.
  2. Insert the SIM into the prepared modem and connect it directly to your USB-C iPhone or iPad. Keep the device unlocked.
  3. Open 4G Module Phone. Allow Local Network and microphone access when needed. Keep the app in the foreground and allow about 1–2 minutes after a cold start.
  4. Version 1.0.1 with the updated modem service connects automatically without a pairing code or owner binding. Version 1.0.0 uses the earlier connection flow; follow your provider’s connection instructions until 1.0.1 is available to you.

4. Verify each feature, beyond “connected”

Calls
Call an authorized ordinary test number and check that both sides hear clearly. Then test incoming calls, answering, mute, hangup, and a second call.
SMS
Send a test SMS from another phone to the modem’s SIM and reply from the app. Data or voice working does not establish that SMS works both ways.
Data
After configuring modem data, disable Wi-Fi and other internet paths on the test device, open a page to verify cellular access, then restore the original network. This uses your SIM’s data.
Reconnection
End the call, unplug the modem, reconnect, and check it reconnects. Verify permissions and versions when moving it to another device.

How USB internet access works

Internet access comes from the modem’s cellular connection and USB network interface, not the app’s call button. It needs the correct APN, USB networking, and address assignment. Data-only SIMs can supply internet but cannot make cellular calls. International data depends on your plan, roaming, and local network. Ask the Skill to verify the actual data path separately.

Check the layer that is failing

Waiting for the modem

Check USB-C data connectivity, power, and whether the system recognizes Ethernet. Then check the modem service, Local Network permission, and app/service versions. Do not reset the SIM first.

Connected, but silent calls

Check microphone permission and audio output. End the call before retesting. Keep version and audio counter information for support without sharing recordings, numbers, or private logs.

Missing SMS

Check the destination, SIM SMS service, and network registration, then refresh the conversation. Ask your provider to inspect modem storage rather than clearing it.

No internet without Wi-Fi

Check the data plan, APN, USB interface address, and DNS. Exclude other proxies or routes. App connection only proves the local service is reachable.

Current limitations

Use this local USB setup with the app in the foreground. Reliable background and lock-screen incoming alerts have not been validated. Wi-Fi Calling and eSIM download/switching are not current app features. Cloud Xieke Phone test results do not establish support in this app.
